Best Healthy Snacks to Stash in Your Bag

|
January 22, 2019

Picture this: You’re out and about, doing your thing, and suddenly, you are HUNGRY. Maybe you skipped lunch, maybe you’ve had a particularly active day, but for whatever reason, you need a snack, and you need it now. We’ve been there too.

There’s no shortage of snacks out there but so few are what you want—something healthy that will satisfy whatever you’re craving while leaving you energized. We try to avoid this at all cost by always keeping a snack stashed in our bags. We’re always looking for new ones that will work no matter what’s going on. Here’s a list of the snacks we’re obsessed with at the moment.

If you’re… eating keto

Dang Foods is crushing the snack game with these new bars. They tick so many boxes: They’re low carb, they’re keto-friendly, they’re plant based—and the best part, they are crazy delicious. In Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, Almond Vanilla and Lemon Matcha flavors, there’s something for everyone. Plus, they have 9 to 10g protein, 14 to 15g fat, and no added sugar, so you will be good-to-go, satisfied and happy until your next meal.

Grass-fed beef sticks

If you’re… craving something meaty and savory

So many snacks are sweet, and that’s fine—unless you don’t have a sweet tooth or that’s just not what you want right now. We keep Paleovalley’s 100% Grass-Fed Beef Sticks in our gym bag for a post-workout protein fix, or really for any time. These are not those gas-station meat sticks of the past—they’re made with 100% grass-fed, grass finished beef from family farms in the U.S., along with organic spices. Plus, they’re fermented using traditional methods, so these sticks are gut-friendly, too. Grab them in Original, Jalapeno, Teriyaki, Summer Sausage or Garlic Summer Sausage flavors.

If you… desperately want a cookie

Cookie cravings are no joke. If you’re like us, when you want a cookie, you want a COOKIE. But it’s almost never worth the sugar crash afterwards. Enter these collagen protein bars from Bulletproof. If you’re saying, “Ugh, protein bars never taste like cookies,” trust us on this one. These are melt-in-your-mouth shortbread-like treats, and they hit that cookie note but leave you feeling awesome afterwards. Fudge Brownie, Lemon Cookie, Vanilla Shortbread, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough or Mint Chocolate Chip—we honestly don’t have a favorite, they’re all so good (yes, we tried them all, it’s our job). With collagen from grass-fed cows, you get 11 to 13g of protein to keep you full, plus plenty of healthy fats, and only 2g sugar. They’re dairy- and gluten-free, too.

Mushroom jerky

If you’re… craving something meaty and savory, but you don’t eat meat

Maybe you don’t eat meat at all, or maybe you want something savory but just don’t feel like meat—either way, you can have that satisfyingly chewy, meaty experience with…mushroom jerky. Oh yeah. Pan’s Mushroom Jerky is the perfect way to get your umami on, with a shot of fiber and vitamin D, too. It’s vegan and gluten-free, so you can’t go wrong. (Try it out on your kids—just tell them it’s jerky, no need to mention the mushrooms. We won’t tell.) We love the Original, but it also comes in Sea Salt & Pepper, Applewood BBQ and Zesty Thai, or grab a variety pack and switch it up.

If you’re… all about the crunch

We are not going to tell you to eat celery when you want chips. That’s just mean. When we want to crunch, we grab Siete Foods amazing tortilla chips. Why they rock: They taste fantastic (of course). They’re cooked in healthy avocado oil. They come in Sea Salt, Nacho, Sal Y Limon, Ranch and Fuego, all the flavors you could want. And, bonus, they’re grain free, made with cassava flour, coconut flour and ground chia, so you can get your crunch on even if you’re paleo (but you don’t have to be to love these chips). Pair them with salsa and/or guac, or just enjoy them on their own. Pro tip: They make killer nachos, too.
