Canned tuna may be more familiar, but allow us to make the case for canned salmon. Like canned tuna, this pantry staple is an excellent source of protein. It also calls for very little prep and is relatively inexpensive, especially compared to fresh fish. So what puts salmon over the edge? Omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon contains about five times more of these healthy fats than canned tuna.

In case you require more convincing, here are a few of our favorite canned salmon recipes. From a fresh take on Caesar salad to super-simple salmon burgers that take 15 minutes to make, these may be the proof you need to make the switch.

1. Salmon and Kale Caesar Salad from A Saucy Kitchen

Take a big bowlful of kale, add canned salmon and avocado, some good shaved Parmesan (or not), and homemade Caesar dressing with anchovy paste (or not). Sounds like the perfect lunch or dinner to us.

2. Salmon Roll Sushi Bowl from Savory Tooth

Deconstructed sushi bowls give you the taste of sushi rolls without the labor of rolling it, and this one with canned salmon is paired with some diced cucumbers, seaweed crumbles and an easy dressing with soy sauce, sriracha and lemon juice. Cook up some rice, and dinner is served.

The avocado is both the delivery system and part of the meal, which makes for a fun presentation. Mash up some canned salmon with parsley, dill, olive oil, and apple cider vinegar, and some sriracha for a little heat.

4. Salmon and Asparagus Pasta Salad from Lord Byron’s Kitchen

Asparagus and salmon feel bright and refreshing, and parsley and Parmesan as garnish adds some additional flavor. As for the pasta? Feel free to swap out whole wheat or gluten free pasta if you like, and serve this cold, warm, or hot. It’s good all those ways.

5. Salmon Burgers with Slaw from Yummly

Salmon cakes are definitely a go-to, but burgers are a little heartier. Here, canned salmon mixes with fresh herbs, bread crumbs, and eggs and pairs with a Greek yogurt-based slaw. The whole thing cooks in a hurry and can be on the table in 15 minutes.
