It’s almost cookout season, which also makes it swimsuit season, plus the time of year you most want to have tons of energy to play outside and enjoy the sunshine. Luckily, with a few simple strategies, you can get your grill on and still look and feel amazing.
- Choose the best meat. Whether you’re in the mood for steak, burgers, chicken, or pork, make sure you buy the best quality you can get. Grass-fed beef, organic chicken and pastured, heritage-breed pork are higher in nutrients and free of antibiotics, so they’re better for you. Bonus: They taste better, too. And getting your hands on these healthier meats doesn’t have to be inconvenient or expensive (we get ours delivered for around $5 per serving with ButcherBox).
- Sprinkle spice instead of sugar. To add amazing flavor to your top-quality meat, back away from the sugary sauces and use spice rubs instead. DIY one from your spice cabinet if you feel adventurous, or pick up a premade one from the grocery store. Spices are loaded with flavor and good nutrition, so you get tons of great taste without the additives and excess sugar in bottled sauces.
- Use top-quality oils. Choose unrefined oils such as avocado oil and coconut oil for cooking, instead of canola or other vegetable oils, which can cause inflammation. Chronic inflammation is associated with a host of illnesses including heart disease, cancer, and obesity. Extra-virgin olive oil is a perfect choice for dressings and drizzling on grilled vegetables after cooking.
- Finish strong. We love a sweet treat after a grilled meal as much as anyone, but you don’t have to down junk that will leave you feeling crashed-out and awful just to enjoy dessert. The grill is already hot—why not throw on a piece of fruit? Halve a peach, brush with a bit of coconut oil, sprinkle with cinnamon, and grill until tender. Drizzle with a tiny bit of honey before serving. Or try grilling watermelon, pineapple, figs, plums or bananas. You get dessert and still feel like a champ, win-win.
