You love meat. We understand. And we aren’t trying to turn you into a vegetarian. But did you know that going meatless one day a week can reduce your risk for many chronic preventable diseases? Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative with a simple goal: encourage eaters everywhere to start the week with meatless meals for their health and the health of the planet. Hundreds of eateries are using Meatless Mondays to transform the start of the week into a day where chefs can show off their best vegetarian fare — and New York City is the perfect place to give Meatless Monday a try. The city’s diverse array of vegetarian, flexitarian and vegan eateries ensures that you’ll get a healthy meal without sacrificing taste or variety. Here are some inside tips on finding your best bets:
- Spend Mondays with Mario – Known mostly for his orange crocs and colorful presence, celebrity chef Mario Batali is also a big supporter of local and sustainably raised fare. Visit any of his U.S. restaurants on Meatless Monday and you’ll be greeted with specially listed entree options. Four of his New York locations are in the Clean Plate guide, each offering it’s own unique flavor: dine in luxury at Del Posto, snag an exclusive reservation at Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, experience Babbo’s relaxed little sister Lupa, or find something for everyone with a family-style sit down at Otto Enoteca Pizzeria.
- …Or Try These Cheaper Options – At the other end of the budget spectrum, Maoz Vegetarian offers a Meatless Monday special at all six of their New York locations: stop in for a delicious falafel salad, topped with your choice of 15 locally sourced sides. You can also snack on a produce-packed pizza at Cafe Viva on Broadway, grab a sustainably sourced veggie burrito at Chipotle, or head over to your local Pret a Manger for one of several veggie sandwiches and a cup of coffee.
