Venice is no stranger to hardcore health nuts—Muscle Beach, anyone?—and now it’s made room for a truly good-for-you joint: San Francisco-based eatery, Cafe Gratitude. The (mostly) raw vegan chain, founded by Matthew and Terces Engelhart and known for its die hard fans, opened on July 17 and already fits in seamlessly with Venice’s laid-back beach vibe. Clean white tables, an exposed ceiling, wooden stools and potted plants scattered about the dining area pay homage to both the healthful menu and the mission: “Our food and people are a celebration of our aliveness.”
The Venice branch, open daily from 8:00am to 10:00pm, is introducing itself by way of a brand new summer menu, shared by the only other SoCal location on Larchmont. With names that inspire a feel-good attitude, like the seasonal bruschetta starter, I Am Present, it’s hard not to smile while ordering. Breakfast dishes include I Am Peace, a live onion bagel with cashew cream cheese, nori “lox,” capers and more. Raw specialties feature I Am Happy, a Mediterranean wrap, and I Am Pure, a kale salad, among others. The menu also offers cooked specialties and vegan desserts, as well as a long list of teas, organic alcohol, juices and smoothies.
