Attach a full service menu to a bar, and just about any joint will call itself a gastropub these days. But The Pikey, a new English-style pub on Sunset, is the real deal—with an organic twist.

Owned by Sean MacPherson (of Il Covo, Swingers and Roger Room, among others) and with chef Ralph Johnson (of Spotted Pig) heading the kitchen, The Pikey swaps traditional mushy peas for persimmon salad with speck and Marcona almonds, or roasted beet salad with feta and hazelnuts. There’s meat to be had, too, but it’s all local, free range and cruelty-free, making a slow roasted pork belly sandwich with cornichons and watercress that much more enjoyable. And as a nod to England’s heavy Indian influence, The Pikey offers eggplant, tomato & lentil curry doled out over Punjabi cornbread, a perfect option for vegetarians.

A few more reasons why we love The Pikey:

  • Crispy Pig’s Ear Salad. Ok, so it’s fried. But it’s also served with kale, a Clean Plates-approved staple.
  • Tagliatelle with Duck Ragu. Once again, the meat is responsibly sourced. Oh yeah, and did we mention there are dandelions in this dish?
  • Sautéed Broccoli Rabe with Chili and Fennel. Sure, the sides also include cheesy mashed potatoes and “thrice cooked” chips. But a pub with this kind of farmers’ market produce? We’ll raise a glass to that.

Speaking of drinks, there’s a variety of pints to enjoy in The Pikey’s cozy booths under dim lighting and decidedly British memorabilia. But that can be found at any local pub.

Good food like this only comes around once every Diamond Jubilee.
