What’s the Deal with CBD?

|
May 14, 2018

Cannabis is enjoying a reputation renaissance Olivia Pope would envy, becoming a darling of wellness pros, yogis and health aficionados.

But the fact is, not everyone wants to get high. And some of us live in states where it remains illegal. So what’s a wellness seeker to do?

This is where CBD comes in. No wonder it’s trending.

What is CBD?
Cannabis contains hundreds of compounds called cannabinoids, the best known of which are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC). Both have therapeutic effects; THC is the compound that gets you high. Though they come from the same plant, they interact with the body in different ways. CBD that’s derived from hemp is legal in all 50 states.

What’s so great about it?

  1. Relieves pain. Some animal studies show that CBD can help relieve chronic pain, easing conditions such as migraines.
  2. Fights inflammation. Researchers are investigating using CBD as an anti-inflammatory to treat diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic syndrome and Alzheimer’s.
  3. Lessens anxiety. CBD can help reduce anxiety and related cognitive impairment, and may work for people with social anxiety disorder and panic disorders.

Researchers are also studying CBD’s potential as a weapon against diabetes and cancer, and as a heart-health booster.

How do I get it?

Sagely CBD cream

With so much interest in CBD lately, it’s no surprise that there are many products hitting the market. One simple, convenient way to get it is to apply it topically using CBD creams, balms and sprays. Our favorite: Sagely Naturals. The Relief & Recovery Cream, made with all plant-based ingredients—including essential oils that make it feel like a mini spa treatment and cooling menthol—feels amazing after a workout. And the Relief & Recovery Spray is a purse essential; you don’t have to massage it in, so you can just mist on a bit on your way into a meeting or running around between appointments for anytime soothing.

CBD supplements

If you prefer to ingest CBD, there are supplements to add to your morning vitamin regimen, oils, tinctures, lip balm, candies and chocolates, and even CBD breath sprays. Have a furry friend? There’s a host of CBD-infused pet products, so your best friend can get the same benefits as you (since all mammals have an endocannabinoid system).

You can even incorporate it into your dining experience, with restaurants and bars infusing CBD into cocktails, coffee and treats.
